National Museum of Natural Sciences at BAS (NPM-BAS)
The National Natural Science Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NPM-BAS) is the only national institution directly involved in the preservation of scientific collections of living and non-living nature from Bulgaria and the world. The main priorities of the museum are the study of biological diversity, the protection of the natural environment and the evolution of organisms. In this regard, the main task of the NPM is the comprehensive study of the fauna, flora, fossils, minerals and rocks of Bulgaria and other countries. The developed scientific directions are taxonomy, faunistics, zoogeography and ecology of arachnids, centipedes, insects and all classes of vertebrates; taxonomy of fossil mammals, birds and brachiopods; floristry; mineralogy. Certain areas are developing with priority and as a result NPM-BAS is a national center for biospeleology, for archaeozoology and paleontology of vertebrates and for the study of bats.
