University Botanical Garden — Varna The University Botanical Garden in the town of Varna is the first Ecopark in the country, harmoniously combining artificial and natural ecosystems. The park covers an area of 360 decares. The dendrological collection includes more than 300 species of trees and shrubs, and the herbaceous plants number more than 500 species. A place to get acquainted with interesting plant and animal species, to take walks and to relax amid nature. Nature — just as we wish to preserve it for the future. In the garden you can explore: The tulip collection is the newest in the Ecopark. It numbers 16 varieties of tulips, selected by colour and height. The lily-flowered and double tulip varieties are especially beautiful. The arrangements are located in the park area of the garden. They have unconventional shapes and follow the contours of the park vegetation. Their flowering begins in March with the earliest varieties and continues until May. The abundance of tulip colours runs from mid-April to early May. A collection of irises — over 150 varieties and cultivars, together with other members of the iris family. The colours are white, yellow, blue and shifting “warm” shades. The flowering of the irises runs from mid-May to mid-June. A rosarium, set on an area of about 2 decares, where over 70 varieties of ornamental roses bloom and give off their fragrance. The new English rose varieties are strongly fragrant, with large double flowers. The varieties of Rosa Floribunda and Wichuraiana, as well as the standard roses, are attractive. The mass flowering of the roses runs from the end of May to about the end of June. A garden with daylilies, where over 25 varieties of hybrid and other species of daylilies, as well as other members of the lily family, open their short-lived but charming flowers every day. The flowering of the daylilies begins in June and continues until July. The “Grasses” collection is represented by over 40 species from the grass, sedge and rush families. The members of the collection are most attractive in late summer and early autumn. That is when the plants are in their greatest diversity of forms and colours. Seasonal expositions of: Cacti and succulents outdoors Summer-flowering species Water areas with typical aquatic and moisture-loving plants, as well as representatives of the animal world. Exotic and unfamiliar trees and shrubs from all over the world: stone pines, holm oak, tulip tree, European larch, dawn redwood, giant sequoia, sterculia, ironwood, golden rain tree, red horse chestnut and many others. Archaeological finds from the 2nd–4th century, uncovered on the grounds of the University Botanical Garden Varna: “Roman tomb” “The storage jars” “Roman villa” The chapel “St. Clement of Ohrid”, built in the highest part of the garden with a wonderful panoramic view of the Bay of Varna. A botanical bazaar, where you can buy plants for the home and seedlings of ornamental trees and shrubs grown in the greenhouses of the University Botanical Garden Varna. The University Botanical Garden — Ecopark Varna offers the organisation of green schools, garden parties, wedding celebrations, family picnics, use of the barbecue areas, fun rides with horse-drawn carriages and riding lessons. In July the University Botanical Garden — Ecopark Varna hosts an equestrian tournament for the cup of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. By tradition, every year Ecopark Varna marks Todorovden with horse races and cart competitions. The flowers of Fritillaria persica, planted next to the large plane tree in the park, are also attractive. More than 10 other tulip varieties are planted in the “Under the lindens” corner and the adjacent grounds.
