About this event

The performance is not recommended for persons under 18 years of age! Aram Khachaturian's ballet, which tells the story of the uprising of gladiators and slaves led by the Thracian Spartacus and his defeat by the troops of the Roman general Crassus, is based on actual events in the history of Rome in the 1st century BC. Both in Khachaturian's music and in the choreographic image in Grigorovich's ballet, Spartacus is brave and noble, and the idea of freedom defines his life and actions. Cunning and cruel, Crassus strives for personal glory and the unlimited power of imperial Rome. The ballet presents the opposing figures of Spartacus and Crassus, personifying the clash of two worlds. Spartacus' devoted mistress Phrygia and the treacherous courtesan Aegina, an accomplice of Crassus, are also placed in central roles.
