"Rita" is a tragicomedy that delicately and ironically explores the difficulty of "letting go" of the people we love. The play questions the meaning of dignity in life and death and raises deep and uncomfortable questions about how justified it is to make decisions on behalf of others. Through witty dialogue and unexpected situations, Marta Buchaka introduces us to an intimate microcosm built of silence, vulnerability, unspoken truths and a constant search for a fragile balance. Tony and Julia are brother and sister. Tony is impulsive and used to looking for shortcuts, while Julia is insecure and afraid to make final decisions. When the vet advises Tony to put his dog Rita to sleep, their roles are reversed: Julia proves surprisingly determined, and Tony reveals an unexpected vulnerability. This change sets the stage for a much deeper clash involving their mother, and long-suppressed tensions come to the surface. The characters come to life in the performances of Denis Fontanari and Monica Garavello under the direction of Alberto Giusta, a director known for his sensitivity and ability to reveal the emotional nuances of the dramatic text. With Rita, Giusta offers a contemporary and impactful reading of Marta Buchaca's play, emphasizing both its emotional power and its subtle comedic undertones.
