"Swan Lake"
About this event
The glamorous history of the world's most beloved ballet performance began in 1895 on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg. Lev Ivanov's innovative choreographic editing recreates the image of the swans with expressive hand movements, instead of the previous dummy wings attached to the shoulders of the ballerinas. Marius Petipa sets the waltz, the mazurka and the other dances for the palace stage. Following the decisions of the next great choreographer of "Swan Lake" Yuri Grigorovich, Sergey Bobrov in turn brings new elements both to the plot and to the choreography. He further develops Grigorovich's idea of black swans and the tragic finale. Odile and the Prince perish, Odette is left alone with her grief, but her end is also foreshadowed because the swan is the only bird that cannot live without its mate... Imbued with much more drama, Sergey Bobrov's version is more complete as a psychological justification of the struggle between good and evil, more effective in visual contrasts and more organic in concept.
